![]() This will import the virtual machine image and settings to VMWare Workstation Player. Give your CloudReady virtual machine a name (or leave the default name intact), then click Import. Locate the CloudReady OVA file, select it, then click Open. Imagine being about to install it on any computer and easily enable Android, Windows (via Parallels Desktop for Chrome OS), and Steam gaming. In VMWare Workstation Player, click Player > File > Open. CloudReady is built on Google's open-source Chromium OS, so it offers a very similar experience to what users get on Chromebooks, with a few notable exceptions: you cannot access the Google Play. PC manufacturers could one day offer it as an alternative to Windows for devices they sell. Google paid good money for Neverware so surely they must be looking to expand the reach of the Chromium OS ecosystem. We’ll continue to have a watchful eye on this integration. Neverware’s update page mentions “Note: To closer align with Chromebooks, CloudReady is changing the partition layout from 27 partitions to 12 partitions on v90 and onward.” As the two worlds continue to merge together, I expect Chromium OS and CloudReady to be even more identical. One of the major changes coming is aligning the number of partitions (the disk layout) to be the same between the two. For the unfamiliar, Chrome OS is an operating system from Google that is basically the Chrome web browser atop Linux, running web applications and storing most data in the Google cloud. ![]() However, it does get regular updates and runs a secure version of Chrome OS that supports the modern web. CloudReady is intended to spread the ChromeOS experience beyond those hardware bounds and short lifecyclesit can be installed on any arbitrary PC hardware, and it doesn't automatically 'expire'. ![]() Neverware has been very open about merging their code with Chromium OS. CloudReady doesn’t get updated in tandem with the shipping version of Chrome OS. For comparison, Chrome OS 92 is about to be released soon which will be 3 versions ahead. Interestingly enough, CloudReady’s stable update channel has been stuck on Chromium OS 89 for an unusually long time.
